Training

Common questions about our driver training and professional qualification courses.

What is the first step to getting my LGV licence?

Every great driver starts with a Driver Medical. It's a quick check-up to make sure you're fit for the road. You can book this with your GP or save some time (and usually money) with these specialists:

How do I apply for my provisional licence?

Once your medical is complete, send off your D2 and D4 forms to the DVLA with your current licence. You can grab these forms online at GOV.UK, or pop into our Tittensor Depot - we've got them waiting for you!

Which theory tests do I need to take?

Once you have your provisional licence, you must pass the following:
  • Multiple Choice (CPC Mod 1): £26.00
  • Hazard Perception (CPC Mod 1): £11.00
  • Case Study (CPC Mod 2): £23.00 (Required only for commercial driving)

What is CPC Mod 4?

If you intend to drive commercially (for work), you must complete the Practical Demonstration Test (Mod 4). We offer this training - contact us for a price.

Should I go for Class 2 or straight to Class 1?

At Bassett's, we generally recommend going straight to Class 1 (Category C+E).

Since the licensing regulations changed, you are no longer required to pass your Class 2 (Rigid) before taking your Class 1 (Artic) test. Most of our candidates choose this route because the training costs for both licences are the same, and once you pass your Class 1 test, you automatically gain your Class 2 entitlement as well. This allows you to drive both articulated and rigid vehicles, saving you the time and expense of returning for a second course later. Plus, holding a Class 1 licence immediately qualifies you for a broader range of high capacity haulage roles, making you a more versatile candidate for employers.

How do I know if I need a 5 day or 8 day course?

Choosing the right course length is vital for your success, so we typically suggest an initial assessment with one of our trainers to decide between a 5 day or 8 day course. This evaluation helps determine which path is most suitable for your current skill level. You can book a stand-alone assessment for £99, or if you prefer to secure your course with a £250 deposit, the assessment is included in that price.

What happens if I fail my practical test?

Don't worry, it happens! If you don't pass on your first attempt, we offer retest packages to get you back on track. Our standard retest includes the required test fee along with a one hour "warm-up" training session immediately before your scheduled test time to help build your confidence.

If you feel you need more time behind the wheel, we can also provide additional training hours tailored to your specific needs. Please contact our training office to discuss your options and to enquire about current pricing.

How do I pay for my course?

We require a £250 deposit to secure your booking. The remaining balance must be paid 14 days before your course begins. We accept BACS, debit, or credit cards. Please note we do not offer credit facilities.

Can I work for Bassett's after I pass?

We are always looking for fresh talent! Many of our current drivers trained right here at our school. You can pick up an employment application form from the Training School or the Security Lodge at any time - or view our current vacancies online.

Do you offer any other training?

Yes! Beyond LGV licences, we provide:
  • First Aid & Mental Health Training
  • Health & Safety / Manual Handling / Fire Safety
  • ADR (Dangerous Goods)
  • CPC & Forklift Truck (FLT) Training
